During the Chinese New Year Holidays, my wife and I drove to Hatyai from Bukit Kayu Hitam on 2005-Feb-10(Thur) .
While having dinner at the Malaysian-Thai Restaurant, we chatted with the owner's son, Sdr. Nik Azlan. Topic was on Thai food and along the way, Nik Azlan mentioned that an Orphanage in Pattani needed help.
According to him , the Orphanage usually gets some money from Malaysian tourists on arranged tours but since few came after the Tak Bai/Masjid Krue Sek incident, they are facing financial difficulty.
Somehow or rather, our hearts were moved and we decided to go to Pattani to see the Orphanage for ourselves .Sdr. Nik Azlan gave us some general directions of how to get there. ( Pattani is about 95 km south-east of Hatyai)
We left for Pattani the next morning and with the grace of Almighty Allah, we actually found the Orphanage without any difficulty !Praise be to Allah.
We met the Headmistress, Hajah Maryam Samoh ( Mak Yae) , chatted with her and her staff , and took a tour of the orphans living quarters.
This is what we managed to find out:
1. The Orphanage is called " Darul Aitam Wal Masakin Lilbanat " and is privately run by muslims and funded through donations, zakat and well wishers. 2. It is an all-girls Orphanage with 110 live-in students ( ages 13 to 18 years). In addition , they also accept poor students for daytime studies. 3. Orphans are provided for free of charge but poor students need to pay RM 6 per mth ( or 2 cupak beras) 4. These students are taught religious & academic studies as well as handicraft work by a small team of teachers. Teachers are paid between RM 150-300 per mth. 5. The orphans live in old wooden houses and cook meals themselves over open fire ( nasi kawah) 6. 5 orphans share one talam of rice. Meal budget : 5 chickens to feed 110 students! 7. Their monthly expenses is about RM 4000 per mth.
We were moved by what we saw and managed to sedekah RM 1000 to the Orphanage( SMS pledges from relatives and own money).
